I myself am fond of WWII drums which had wooden hoops and lugs, particularly my Leedy Dreadnaughts. Gretsch kits in Moonglow Satin, Anniversary Sparkle, or Midnight Sparkle. Slingerland kits in Sparkling Peacock, Capri or Fiesta Pearl finish.

I have a mid-60s Ludwig that someone essentially paid me $1000 to take from them. If you do your homework and scour the used marketplace (especially outside of eBay) you can usually get a heck of a deal on a vintage kit. Depending on the model you're looking for, you could spend as little or as much as you could imagine. Slingerland stuff seems to go for a little less than Ludwigs and Gretsch, Camco, and Rogers seem to go for a premium. Their value ranges due to condition and how much demand is out there for them. They were called WFL until the late '50s.

The "drumset" really took off after WWII, and really in the mid-50s with the advent of "rock & roll" and the addition of drumset to country music thanks to Buddy Harmon. even in the 1940s they looked (and sounded) really weird with things like tacked bottom heads, 28" bass drums and gut snares.
